was on set yesterday & the Sound Mixer had this on his iPad 2. it allow you to take notes using your finger or a stylus as a pen. he was using it to mark up his script. looked very promising for iPad Script Supers. it's usually $4.99 but is on 'sale ' for $0.99.

so i ran across this and thought it might be of interest to my fellow Script Sups. it allows you to stream video from an HD camera to your iPad. now i think you'd need some capture software to grab some screen shots, but it might be useful for those 5D or 7D shows if they're run & gun with little or no monitor support. the LINK is in the TITLE of the post. Interesting Happenings

i haven't posted in awhile because i've been lucky enough to be 1.) working and 2.) taking on 'other' projects. some of those 'other' projects are entertainment related, and some aren't. i won't bore you with the ones that aren't. i promise. ok, i might mention them, at some point...

anyway, have run across a lovely gentleman, Cliff Joyce, that is developing software for the iPad 2 that will be usable for Script Supers, i met with him today what he showed me, and what we talked about were pretty cool.

basically it will be a series of iPads that are connected to a network & they'll be able to share information (metadata) between themselves. things like circle takes, we circle something and it comes up on both the sound & camera man's iPads. things like that. i won't list everything we talked about here because it was at least a 2 or 3 hour chat & i'm still going over things in my mind and jotting down notes to send to him.

i'll keep you all posted but i have to say, i'm really excited about this.

i'm also excited about all the new tablets coming out, many of these faux-Pads look really promising for light weight, long battery life, working possibilities. i'm going to try and contact some of these manufacturers and see if i can get either some demo units or find a convenient location where i can go see them.

again, i'll let y'all know what i find.

if you see anything that looks promising, toss it my way. i'd love to take a look at it.

these are incredibly exciting times people, let's keep our eyes & ears open and we might change how movies are made.

Chinese mobile device manufacturer Malata passed the sleek SMB-A1002 Android tablet through the FCC today. The device features a 10.1” capacitive touch screen with a 1024 x 600 resolution, Nvidia Tegra 2 processor a 1.3MP webcam, 1GB of RAM, 512MB of flash memory, support for up to 32GB of external microSD storage 1080p video output, Bluetooth and 802.11 b/g/n WiFi. The SMB-A1002 weighs about 28.6 ounces (810g), and measures 10.5” x 6.8” x 0.6” (267mm x 173mm x 143mm).

Unfortunately, Malata doesn’t have a strong presence in the United States, so we’re not sure if or when the SMB-A1002 tablet will make it to the States. No word on pricing, either.

bear in mind these are very rugged machines, they are sold to the military, evidently to be sent into combat situations. they are pretty high end machines so the price reflects that at about $4000.00 a pop.

i am in contact with a gentleman who is one of the distributors of these and other machines similar to these & am gonna try to see if Local 871 would be interested in hosting a demo of these & possibly a discount for anyone interested. haven't asked this gentleman but am wondering if they have & would be willing to sell demos or refurbished computers at an even greater saving. i will post any further info as it might come available.

So I decided to try this software I saw a recommendation for on the Script Super yahoo newsgroup, ContinuityGroup@yahoo.com, called Dropbox (you can find the link to it in another post on this site). The gentleman recommending it loved it, and having now used it for a few days on this ultra low-dough, non-union job, I know why. It's just… wonderful.

Here's how it works:

You download the free software that gives you 2 GB of space. If you need more space you can pay a monthly fee
You set up a folder in the folder, called My Dropbox, that is downloaded to your desktop.
You add all the things you want to share with others to this folder(s).
You invite them, via email message, to the folder.

And "Tada" everyone you invited now has access to these files and folders.

So, not only can I drop PDF's of my nightly paperwork into My Dnopbox and the Production office, the Editors and the AD's can pickup my notes anytime they like. But I've also invited my Sound Mixer to My Drop box folder and I throw a PDF of my Editor's Log on there, whenever I think about it, and he can keep up with the circle takes as we go along.

If we were doing circle takes on the Red Cams, I'd have invited my AC's as well. So I'd never have to touch another camera or sound report again!

I can see this being incredibly useful for the sharing of continuity photos, and notes, between both Departments and Units

Tips & Tricks:

I suggest that you only throw PDF's into the folder because this software was designed for collaboration and someone could, accidently, edit your Word or Excel forms.

Also, please note that you need to let the others that have access to your files and folders that they must Copy/Paste not Drag and Drop. If they remove something from the folder, others can't see it. You can recover it however with just a couple of clicks

So. Take a look and see what-cha think.

UPDATE: 10/19/10

It seems my Editor thought this item so useful that he made a folder of his own & dropped it into my main show folder. He created cut scenes for my Director & Producers & put them into this folder. He then invited the Director and Producers to my Dropbox so that they could access the cut scenes, the Director then invited the DP so that he too could look at said scenes.

Had no idea, up until then that anyone could add more people to the invites other than myself. but thought this was a very interesting use of the software.

i'm planning on updating this whenever i run across a new bit of information.

the average American uses paper & wood products equal to 7 trees a year.

just a personal note: i took over a kids show this summer from a paper & pencil friend & it took me about a week to get off the hard copy delivery list. at the end of a week i'd accumulated approximately 2 1/2 reams of paper. things like script revisions, schedules, call sheets, memos, etc. i used this stack of paper to talk my UPM/Producer into giving me a kit rental. i also reminded her that this did not include all the paperwork I generate but no longer turn into paper.

2. Yard trimmings & food scraps account for 23% of municipal solid waste.

Awesome reason to either set up a compost bin in your backyard and/or start a 'worm farm' if you don't have a backyard. neither of these items smell bad if properly used & they both create fantastic soil to grow all sorts of wonderful things. Plants, herbs, and vegetables just to name a few...

3. The U.S. loses 3,500 acres annually to landfills

Yet another reason to recycle paper, plastic, metal of all kinds, electronics, to compost, find new uses for old things, and to buy stuff with less packaging. anything to help shrink our landfills.

Apple patents touchscreen convertible designs for Macs

Patently Apple has put together an analysis of a patent Apple filed in Europe that describes a system for Macs to convert between their standard configurations and touch-centric configurations. PA believes it will switch automatically between Mac OS X and iOS. I’m not so sure.

The patent was published a while ago in January by the World Intellectual Property Organization under the patent name “Transitioning between Modes of Input”. True to its name, the patent does describe and demonstrate how an iMac and Macbook would switch between their usual configurations and more horizontal configurations better suited for touch input.

To switch to touch mode, the iMac screen would pivot upward and forward to bring it closer to the user. The Macbook description lists, as an example not as the design to be patented, a system identical to convertible notebooks/Tablet PCs. In both cases, the conversion is described as changing from a high-resolution user interface, like the current Mac OS X, to a zoomed-in, low-resolution one suitable for touch input.

While the idea of a convertible notebook is hardly novel, the conversion described for the iMac appears to offer a wide range of screen angles, addressing an issue we regularly bring up when looking at touchscreen all-in-ones. If Apple gets these designs to market, it would be a big boost for touchscreen input and could get people to stop looking weirdly at our convertible notebooks and Tablet PCs (though we should be ready to cringe at the words “Oh, just like the new Macbook”).

However, I cannot find any mention in the patent of the switching between operating systems that Patently Apple believes is in here. The description primarily points to a system that zooms in on the focus window and drops elements that are not suitable for a touch-centric UI when converted to touch mode. The ability to pull down the menu bar in touch mode (shown at right), an element that does not normally exist in iOS, is specifically mentioned. While it is possible that Apple could release a Mac that can run Mac OS X and iOS, that is not what is described in the patent.

Regardless, commenters in the past have brought up the notion of a dual-mode OS that can switch between a desktop-based UI and a tablet-based one, and the idea was met mostly with enthusiasm (I’m all for it). The patent also mentions external access to the system that can trigger the UI switch, which would make it easier to remote control your Mac via an iOS device or vice versa. What’s in the patent appears to be worth pursuing, but I don’t believe a dual-OS Mac is in there.

i know i haven't posted in awhile, but will be writing something up in a few days about my trials and tribulations on getting timecode into the tablet pc. there's been an interesting set of circumstances that have led me to, and on, this 'quest', and i'll be blogging about all of them soon.

in the mean time, i wanted to post this information about a Yahoo News Group called ContinuityGroup, and tell those that haven't signed up for it that it's a very valuable resource for Script Supervising information. there are a lot of pretty wonderful people that are very gracious with their time & knowledge & are quick to answer all kinds of questions.

it is moderated, so you have to sign up and wait to be approved, but that usually takes a day or so at most. i urge you to check it out. the Script Supers that subscribe to the group could not be kinder or more giving of their time, and experience.

let me just say, that while i think this is a step in the right (or write) direction it's still not what we need. from what i was able to read, it only allows two line thicknesses, you cannot import pictures or text, and, most importantly it does NOT allow you to write over/on an existing document.

it is however rather inexpensive at only $2.99.

my recommendation is that if you have or are thinking about buying an iPad in the hopes of using it on set some day, write the makers of this little ditty & tell them what you think. it might show up in a future version.

The Rolling Knapsack Chair.

This rolling knapsack transports cold or hot food and converts into a comfortable chair. The knapsack has a telescoping handle, a foam handgrip, and two solid rubber wheels, enabling ease of portability. When you reach your destination, the molded plastic seat folds down from the knapsack's steel frame, providing a sturdy chair that supports up to 300 lbs. Scenechronize - My 'Review'

First let me say that the Scenechronize people put on a very nice presentation. They provided both the lunch and the raffle items (2 scenechronize hats & a $50.00 Target gift card if you're interested.) so you missed out on a free lunch and swag right off if you didn't attend...

And they are very knowledgeable about their product, gave easy to understand answers, even for the less tech savvy among us. They seemed to understand the work flow that goes on in a Production Office, how distribution works, and how things change at a moments notice, that no two shows are ever the same & how this would have to be taken into account when using their system. They seemed incredibly flexible and eager to listen to any and all suggestions, and when encountering a new 'quirk' usually said something along the lines of, 'yes, it can do that', or 'yes, we can set that up for you'. Now i don't mean to make it sound like they're 'Yes Men'. We did hear them say in at least one instance, 'we're working on that, but that feature isn't ready yet'. or something similar.

Honestly, if i was still a Production Coordinator, i'd beg, borrow or steal the money to get this on my show. And they are more than happy to demo this to anyone and everyone that wants to see it in action. Which i recommend if you are even vaguely interested in saving yourself time, money & heartache if you have a massive distro list on your project. The practically automatic watermarking feature alone seems worth it's weight in...well paper probably. But you get my meaning.

About the product: it's web/browser based, meaning there's no software to load onto your computer, and if there's an update it's automatically there when you log on in the morning. As long as you have internet access, it's all good. However, if i understood them correctly, they are looking into a stand-alone module in case you're out in the jungle and there just isn't a Starbucks Wifi Hotspot within 500 miles. I'm assuming a sync feature would keep you up to date once you found that all important coffee shop with the internet connection on top of those Peruvian Mountains you're filming in.

The ease of use on this system is pretty amazing, the learning curve is almost non-existent, even the most techno-hesitant will be up and running in no time. AND when they say they have 24 hour Customer Service, they mean 24/7/365 Customer Service as well as the implementation of special requests. Ask them to tell you some stories about their Watermarking feature. Let's just say it now comes with options you didn't even know you needed. Hilarious.

The security that this thing provides is wicked crazy. The levels of security, and the levels of access that can be assigned, to my mind, err on the side of psychosis. But if that's what your producers and studio execs want, there's more than enough paranoia to go around.

There are 2 versions, Distro & Distro VPO (VPO i assume stands for Virtual Production Office, but that's just my assumption, they never said what it stood for.) The first is a bit cheaper and has slightly less features. The second is a lot more comprehensive and also looks worth the price. And the price is something they're willing to work with you on, depending upon the project. For actual numbers $$ go to their site and drop them an email.

They're working on a stand-alone version of their breakdown feature, made for the AD's, (which is only available in the Distro VPO version, if i understood correctly) and if you know and actually like any of the ADs you work with, send them to this website. They'll be your best friends for life. The software takes a script and in a matter of just a few seconds, minutes at most, it pulls out all the Slug Lines, Character names, and half a dozen other bits of important info, all of which can be changed/altered/added to. (Although it can't actually alter the script in any way, it can make a list of the AD suggestions so that they be sent to the Writers for revision pages.) It's appears to be totally customizable. It also does a page count, which i have to admit i'd have to test myself before i'd trust, but can also be altered if found..not to the AD's liking. And it can then take that info and export it into any number of other formats (Excel, Word, etc.) and it can be given to, say... the Script Supervisor (you knew i'd get to us eventually), and he/she could then use that info to do their own breakdowns. And I must admit, the idea of having something save me all that time on typing the Slug Lines, Int/Ext, etc., is very appealing.

I also think that the sisters & brothers in our other classifications at Local 871 should give this a once over as well. Production Accountants, Art Department Coordinators, perhaps even Teleprompters & Stage Mangers, we all generate and use forms and files, whether they be physical or virtual, and they might benefit in some way from the ease of distribution of the annoying pieces of paper we have to have every day. Now i'm not in any of those classifications, so i'd have to leave those reviews to greater minds than mine. But go to the website, look at the system and if you have any comments or suggestions, no matter who you are or what you do, drop them an email. They respond quite promptly and as i think i said before, they're eager to hear new ideas.

Now, let's talk about what I know you've all been waiting for, what this actually provides for Script Supervisors. Unfortunately, at this time, nothing. Or almost nothing, if you don't count the ability to send the AD breakdown info to us. (Oh and it can make lists. Lots & lots of lists. Lists of Sets, of Actors, of Scenes, of what scenes each actor is in, what set each actor is on and all by scene number.) But they'd like to change that. They'd like to involve the Script Supers of 871 in a possible Script Super module. Perhaps a breakdown feature of our own, or a faster way to get our information to the people that want/need it, a place to store our continuity pictures so anyone can access them, things like that. And they are very mindful of the fact that not everyone is digital. They want to make sure that even our paper and pencil brethren (and why They'd be reading this blog i have NO idea) can benefit from this system and it's software.

Anyway, stay tuned. Our local will be passing along any and all info the Scenechronize people may share. And if you're not in the Union or you're just not on the West Coast of the US, that doesn't mean you're outta luck. Give 'em a call or drop 'em an email. They're a very small but friendly bunch and i'm sure they'd be willing to help in any way they can.

We're not going to lie, it was a major let down when we found out that this glowing V-shaped mouse with faux Microsoft branding is nothing more than a splendiferous concept, but we're holding back the tears as best we can. The super futuristic-looking eVouse doubles as both a regular mouse and a pen sensor (in theory, anyway) or as its designer Marcial Ahsayane says, "it's a mix between a classic mouse and a tablet PC." We assume that means you can -- you know -- write digitally with it, but it will also work as an air mouse with touch sensitive buttons. Maybe you can discern a little more from the images below where it seems to morph into a boomerang of sorts, but in the meanwhile we'll be in the corner wishing this thing had a ship date attached to it. You hearing this, Microsoft?

I posted about this awhile back and it was free then, but it seems it's become popular enough that now they're charging for it. they however charge a subscription instead of a one time price. it's $2.95/month ($29.88), or you can buy 2 years for $17.49/year or 3 years for $12.97/year.

i wish i'd gotten it when it was free, so i could tell you it was worth the price, but i'll have to leave that to someone who's used it. i will say it looks good, and it is, by far still cheaper than anything Microsoft puts out.

There's a Production Coordinator's Craft Meeting at the Local on this Saturday, February 6, 2010 at Noon. Now you're probably wondering why i'm posting this when the Script Super's Craft Mtg is two weeks later on February 20th. well that's because there's going to be a demo of the Scenechronize software system on this Saturday, and i'd like to take a look at it.

It looks great for AD’s and Production Coordinators, UPM, etc. Not much for us Script Supers at the moment, but I do like the breakdown format thingy, that might be a bit of a time saver…

Those predictions for next year, and others, are being presented on Thursday by the technology research firm IDC.

IDC’s entry in the year-end forecasting sweepstakes doesn’t lack for detail. There will be 300,000 iPhone applications by the end of next year, nearly triple the current number, according to IDC. There will be 50,000 to 75,000 Google Android applications, up from about 10,000.
Interested in digital electric meters, the home devices crucial for energy-saving smart electric grids? Twenty million will be deployed in United States households in 2010, and more than 60 million worldwide, IDC says. Spurred by federal stimulus dollars, 77 million Americans, or 25 percent of the population, will have electronic health records, compared with about 14 percent now, the firm predicts.

Often, it is the thinking behind the data points that is most illuminating. I discussed the predictions on Wednesday with Frank Gens, IDC’s chief analyst.

Take all those applications iPhones and Android phones, for example.
Mr. Gens notes that there are roughly 10,000 Windows PC applications listed on Microsoft’s Windows 7 compatibility Web site.

“The market follows the applications,” Mr. Gens said. “That’s a message for the software industry, particularly for the PC industry.”

The competition to supply the tools and digital workbench — a “platform,” in techspeak — for cloud computing will intensify, Mr.
Gens says. The early cloud platforms come from Salesforce.com’s Force.com, Microsoft’s Azure, and Google’s App Engine. In 2010, I.B.M.
and Cisco Systems will enter the field with their cloud platforms, IDC predicts.

“This is going to be the strategic battleground of the next 20 years in computing,” Mr. Gens says.

The long-rumored Apple touchscreen tablet computer, or iPad, will arrive in 2010, IDC predicts. It will be more of an oversized iPod Touch, with an 8-inch or 10-inch screen, than a downsized Macintosh.
With its larger screen, IDC says, the Apple tablet will be ideal for watching movies, surfing the Web, playing online games, and reading books, magazines and newspapers. It will be general-purpose, unlike Amazon.com’s single-purpose Kindle reader. The Apple offering, Mr.
Gens says, “could deliver a real kick in Kindle’s butt.”

Netbook PCs, IDC predicts, will move beyond stripped-down Web-surfing, e-mail and note-taking machines, costing $200 to $400. More powerful models, Mr. Gens says, may cost $700 or more, though will still be extremely light and small.

IDC also sees I.B.M. getting back into the computer network business by acquiring Juniper. Networking, Mr. Gens says, is increasingly part of the package of capabilities the largest technology companies must offer corporate clients. He points to Hewlett-Packard’s recent purchase of 3Com and Cisco’s partnership with EMC as evidence of the trend.

“If you are going to be in the hardware systems business,” Mr. Gens says, “you need network competence.”

All Hands In With New Apple Patent

A new Apple Patent application (from June 2009) shows off new information that Apple is working on for multi-touch. From what AppleInsider is reporting shows that this isn’t just finger touch, but it looks like you can put use your entire palm to leave greasy palm prints on your screen. From what I’m reading this looks like it is aimed at creating a new way of typing on a virtual keyboard. I may be wrong (after all this is speculation) but this looks like it is aimed for larger than the rumored 10 inch screens on the mythical Tablet.

Hi all, I had the same question a little while ago and decided to take matters into my own hands. So I've been working on an iPhone app for script supervisors that will add time, eighths and also have a regular calculator. It will also have a shot length converter (so if you time a shot at :23 that was filmed at 150fps it will tell you the shot length when it's played back at 24fps).

I'll be looking for a few beta testers soon, so if you have an iPhone and are interested, please reply to me off the list.

I ran into a gentleman on set (sound mixer) that’s married to a woman that works at IMDB.com (that’s the Internet Movie Database for those of you that might not know) and he told me that IMDB is about to undergo a major overhaul and they want suggestions on how to make their site better and more useful to people. Of course their goal is to get more folks to decide to pony up the $100/year (or whatever it is) to upgrade to their Pro service, but if it offers significant advantages I don’t see that as a bad thing.

A few quick things, they know that those of us in the Other Crew list want our own category, and they know people want to be able to take things off their own page. Both of these things are currently not possible with this site as it is. They’re also going to make it possible to update your page faster and easier. So it doesn’t take 24700 clicks to put one new project on your page. They’re going to add a new category of projects that will cover those ‘new media’ shoots. Webisodes, web commercials, etc. they’ve just recently added the ability to put your resume on their site, I haven’t had a chance to check that out yet, but it sounds interesting.

But if there’s anything else you can think and would like to suggest, that would be great, and I’d be happy to pass the suggestions along. I’ll cut and paste them into one big list and email them to the woman’s sound mixer husband.

Some interesting info: they are looking into being able to see whether you’ve worked with someone on a set before. Example: let’s say you’re taking over “Without a Trace” (yes I know it’s not coming back), and you want to see if you know anyone on the show. They’re looking at a way to compare your page with the show’s page and displaying any people you have in common. Kind of like ‘mutual friends’ in Facebook. This function is currently scheduled for the Pro service at this time, but I think it’d be interesting to check out.

Also, just some general info, I was recently told that Dreamworks will not hire anyone that doesn’t have an IMDB page. Even if the person is being recommended or put in for hire by the people that are going to be working with him/her, if Dreamworks can’t verify work thru IMDB, that person will not get the job. And I’m sure they’re not the only ones that use the site for verification purposes. The bloody bean counters strike again.

And I know from personal experience that UPM’s, Producers & Directors have looked up my IMDB page during an interview, while I was in the room, because they’ve told me that’s what they were doing. Which is why I try to keep my page up to date. So if you haven’t updated your page lately, now might be a great time to do that. And if you don’t know how, I’m sure there are several of us here on this list that can walk you thru the process.

Now I’m not sure when the unveiling of this new and improved IMDB is scheduled to happen, but I’ll try to get that info for us.

And please feel free to pass this info onto ALL of your friends in the business. I’d love to be able to send a virtual grocery list to these folks. And who knows, maybe the new site will be worth dishing out the extra cash.

i recommend this software. it's incredibly useful if you get yourself a new computer and don't want to have to buy all new software for it. it does take a bit of time, if you have alot to transfer, but it beats all hell out of trying to find all the CD's and the key numbers and passwords for your old stuff.

and one of the nicest things is that it transfers over everything just exactly the way you like it. all the settings will be exactly duplicated so you can be up and running with Word or Excel without having to relearn how to set the program to your preferences.

here's a nifty little freebie PDF creator, PC Only, that also let's you preview all your pages before you print to paper (or PDF). you can remove pages, or text or images per page. or remove all text or images from all the pages. the one downside is you can't, for instance, select one image or maybe three lines of text on a page and remove just that image or just those lines, it's an all or nothing kinda thing. but i still like it.

and it keeps a running tally of all the money and paper you've safed by not printing things you don't want in your paper document or PDF.

this is really fascinating to me. it's a patch you can Velcro to your clothes, gear, computer, whatever, that has a URL embedded in it. what does that mean to the average person? well you can basically carry around a link to your resume or imdb.com page, your blog, or your favorite YouTube video, or to the Discovery Channel/Dirty Jobs page. it's totally up to you, and it can be changed as your needs change. the person seeing the patch just has to have a bit of scanning software in their iPhone, or smartphone to grab the URL off your patch, but that's easily downloadable and fairly cheap.

the other interesting thing is that you can copy this symbol onto vinyl stickers, or whatever and as long as the scanning is possible, you have the same deal. so you can label your expensive gear with your info in a small little sticker. the patch or P8tch cost about $20.00 but it seems like a pretty cool thing. well to me at least :)

A look at the HP TouchSmart TX2

I’ve been lucky enough to be playing with an HP TouchSmart TX2 Tablet PC for the last couple of weeks.

I will not be doing a full review of the unit as it ships for the simple reason that one of the first things I did was rebuild it with the Windows 7 Release Candidate so I could look check out the new Windows Touch experience on a multi-touch capable machine.

That is not to say that I am not going to review it here – just that I won’t be reviewing the software that ships on the device. I am going to break the review into two parts. In Part 1 – this post – I’ll give you a tour of the TouchSmart TX2 hardware. Part two will drill down into the Windows Touch experience you will find with Windows 7 on a Multi-touch capable machine.

The HP TouchSmart TX2 – or TX2 for short – is a Tablet PC that is firmly aimed at the consumer market. It has been built with media and ease of use in mind. It begs to be touched. It also has a stylish finish that will look more at home in the living room than the board room. Check out the graphic on the lid.

On the front bezel you will find the power switch, IR Receiver, and the usual jacks and a hardware switch for the wireless.

But hang on – on closer inspection the three jacks are not that usual after all. Left-to-right the first 3.5mm jack can be used either as an optical output to hook into your home theatre system or for your headphones. The middle one can be used for a second pair or headphones which is a nice touch on a media notebook. the third jack is a microphone line in.

The keyboard is fairly standard, as is the touchpad in front of it. One nice touch is the hardware button directly above the touchpad, which can be used to disable or enable it. I like the placement. I frequently disable and enable the touchpad when I am typing on my mobile devices because I have a bad habit of tapping the touchpad with my thumbs and this can move the cursor. The placement on the TX2 is excellent and the little picture of the touchpad next to the button glows white when the touchpad is enabled and red when it is disabled.

Above the keyboard on the left side are three hardware buttons for volume down, mute and volume up.

On the right side of the screen there is a fingerprint reader and three hardware buttons. I did not install the button driver in Windows 7 as I don’t know if it is going to be the same as the Vista one or not and I didn’t want to set false expectations.

On the top edge of the screen there is a webcam, flanked on either side by two microphones in an array. Microphone arrays are by far superior to single microphones for voice applications so this should make the TX2 excellent for use with Skype, Live Messenger or other voice applications.

At the base of the screen there are two Altec Lansing speakers and the sound quality is really pretty good for a notebook.

On the right side there is the stylus, one USB port, the network port, a proprietary expansion port, a VGA connector and a vent.

On the back there is a modem jack, two more USBs and the lock port.

On the left side there is the power in, a card reader (SD, Memory Stick and MS Pro, MMC & XD) and a PC Express slot. There is also a CD/DVD burner.

Tucked away in the PC Express slot is one of my favourite features. A little remote for Media Center. Isn’t it cute?

The hinge is very sturdy and the TX2 does not suffer much from the wobbly head that plagues most convertibles. On either side of the keyboard there is a little raised peg. Once the screen is rotated around the magnetic latch clicks into place the two pegs fit into recesses on the lid which gives the device a nice secure feel in slate mode.

There is a lot to like about the TX2. Below are some of the highlights for me.

Great styling
Functional design
Multi-touch – that’s a big one.
Nice active digitiser as well
Great screen and sound for a notebook of this size.
That funky little remote!

On the down side:

There is a fair bit of fan noise.
The battery life is not great. I suspect that this is a side effect of the fairly high-end video processor and CPU. I would give a bit away here to be able to watch a whole movie on battery.
No eraser on the stylus
Volume control buttons are covered when converted to slate mode. When you are in slate mode, that is when you need your hardware buttons!

Over all a good home machine that will handle all the browsing and media that you throw at it with ease and will also not balk at a bit of gaming. The multi-touch experience is great in Windows 7 – but that will be the topic of my next post.

New Fujitsu Tablet PC

looks good, suggest you take a look at the upgrade options. but at 3.5 to 4lbs (depending upon which battery you have), 7.5 or 11.3 hours of battery life, plus all kinds of included and optional capabilities, it might be what you're looking for.

Fujitsu ST6012 Tablet PC Arrives, First Impressions

Upon returning from a trip down south, I was pleased to find a box from Fujitsu waiting patiently for me. As any geek worth his salt would do, I immediately opened it up and was pleased to find an ST6012 Tablet PC!

I’ve only had the ST6012 for a couple of days, but my initial impression is very positive. I’ve found the ST6012 to be extremely light and have just about every option I could possibly want: SD card slot, a dedicated PC card slot, smart card reader, lots of configurable buttons on both the right and left side of the screen, and a very nice 1280 x 800 indoor / outdoor display. In addition, the standard 6-cell battery is giving me between 4 and 5 hours of battery life. An optional 9 cell high capacity battery is also available. An optional web camera (not on this eval unit) is also available.

The only negative I’ve found is that the 1.4 ghz Core 2 Duo Ultra Low Voltage tablet pc runs a bit sluggish. This evaluation unit only has 1 gb of RAM and it has an 80gb HDD, so that doesn’t help much either. In addition, the ST6012 is running 88 processes out of the box on this Vista Business factory installation. Upgrading the RAM and going with an SSD certainly would help things. I might install Windows 7 on this Tablet PC just to try the performance and inking, but will mostly concentrate on the Vista installation for purposes of my review since Windows 7 isn’t out yet.

It certainly is light weight and quiet though, and is a joy to hold in my hands. Inking is also quite smooth. The felt cloths in the back are a welcome change from other tablet pcs.

8.9" Tablet PC - Resistive Touchscreen

this looks very interesting. a very small tablet pc that weighs less than 2lbs. will have Windows 7 as an operating system (OS). the touchscreen may or may not be a good thing. would depend upon whether or not the side of my hand activated programs while i was trying to write my notes, but it would be great if you're a touch typist perhaps.

Archos attempt to resurrect the UMPC category of devices got off to a good start yesterday in Paris with the launch of its 16-mm thick Archos 9 pctablet -- a 8.9-inch 1024x600 pixel tablet riding an 800MHz or 1.2GHz Atom Z515 processor, 1GB of memory, up to 120GB disk, webcam, Bluetooth 2.1, 802.11b/g WiFi, and SIM card slot for WWAN connectivity. Archosfans just posted a video of the Archos 9 prototype in action and honestly, that resistive touch-screen looks pretty damn impressive to finger taps. However, since it's running Windows 7, a full-blown desktop OS, you'll still need to pull out the included stylus on occasion to interactive with the Windows 7 UI or applications designed for a mouse and keyboard. Fortunately, the Archos 9 offers an optical mouse on the right-side bezel and left and right mouse keys along the left. Other notable highlights include a removable battery of undetermined capacity, a docking port for added expansion (Ethernet, 2x USB, VGA output), stereo speakers, and an adjustable kickstand for viewing video or working on the Archos 9 with attached USB keyboard and mouse. The Archos rep says it'll be priced between €450 and €500 when it ships around the time Windows 7 launches at the end of October. What we're wondering is how much finger-friendly UI customization will be included by Archos and how they plan to market the device to consumers who already own smartphones, laptops, and even netbooks. P.S. While Archosfans claims the Archos 9 is multi-touch, nothing that we've found supports that claim on the Archos site or in the video demonstrations. Nevertheless, multi-touch resistive touchscreen technology does exist as demonstrated to us by Stantum back in February. In fact, the ASUS Eee PC T91 also features an 8.9-inch resistive display that does support mult-touch.

ok, this is very cool. it's an SD card that you can buy that comes in 2G and 4G and it has built in WiFi. what that means is you can put it in your camera and once you program it, it will automatically send all the pictures you take, or only those you select, to your computer or several websites of your choosing.

so let's say your on set and you're taking your continuity photos and you send the ones you like to your computer and also to either Flickr, or Facebook, or Picasso, etc. You can give permission to only certain people to see these photos, so that they could be available to your 2nd Unit SS, and Director or AD, to the Makeup, Hair & Wardrobe people, to the Production Office, and on and on.

you could also set this up so only your friends & family members had access, for things like vacation and holiday pics. (be aware that at the moment these cards cost between $50 - $150 but prices should come down as they catch on.)

just the fact that it sends them to my computer without having to have a card reader is pretty cool to me...
